Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine has announced that it has broken ground for a new electric arc furnace at its Linz site, one month after breaking ground for a new furnace at its Donawitz site.

The construction of the electric arc furnace, which will have an annual production capacity of around 1.6 million mt of carbon-reduced steel, will start in 2024, and the EAF is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.

The company will invest around €1 billion at the site in Linz and will create 6,200 jobs.

Integrating the two green electricity-powered electric arc furnaces into steel production will allow a reduction of around 30 percent of carbon emissions from 2027.

Voestalpine plans to replace two more blast furnaces at its Linz and Donawitz sites starting in 2030 to achieve its net-zero target by 2050.
