Voestalpine breaks ground for EAF at Donawitz

Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine AG has announced that it has broken ground for a new electric arc furnace at its Donawitz site.

The construction of the electric arc furnace, which will have an annual production capacity of 850,000 mt of carbon-reduced steel, will start in 2024, and is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.

The company will invest around €450 million at the site in Donawitz and will create 2,800 jobs.

In addition, Italian plantmaker Danieli will be responsible for the engineering, production, and commissioning of the electric arc furnace, using digimelter technology.
