Usiminas iron ore subsidiary investing $32.8 million in dry stacking system

Mineração Usiminas (MUSA), the iron ore division of flats steelmaker Usiminas, will invest BRL 160 million ($32.8 million) to build a dry stacking system at its Itatiaiuçu mine, located in the city of same name in Minas Gerais state, according to media reports.

The project also includes a filtering facility, which will be attached to MUSA’s other existing equipment at its Itatiaiuçu mine. The company expects to conclude the project by February 2021, and it should generate about 400 direct and indirect jobs, the media reports said.

A media report said MUSA is expected to become the first Brazilian iron ore company to use the dry stacking system. Usiminas said it started studying the dry stacking system for its Minas Gerais mine in 2016.
