U.S. steel production for week ended August 6, 2005
For the week ended August 6, 2005, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reports that domestic raw steel production totaled 1.86 million net tons at a capacity utilization rate of 80.4 percent. The corresponding week of 2004 saw production of 2.1 million net tons at a capacity utilization rate of 83.7 percent. 2005s production figures for the week ended August 6 represent a 12 percent year-on-year decrease and a 3.9 percent week-on-week decrease. Year-to-date production through August 6 was nearly 62 million net tons at a utilization rate of 86.3 percent. This represents a 5.7 percent decrease from the previous years production-to-date of 65.5 million net tons at a utilization rate of 94.1 percent. Regionally, production in the Northwest Indiana/Chicago area noted a 17000 net ton week-on-week decrease. For the week ended August 6, local steelmakers reported steel production totaled 418000 net tons versus 435000 net tons from the prior week. By way of comparison, production in the Southern District, the nations largest steel producing district was 538000 net tons.
