On Thursday an Energy Department advisory panel was anticipated to issue an endorsement of shale gas exploration in the US, which explains that the hydraulic fracturing method used to extract natural gas in shale formations can be done safely. While the panel's report requires higher standards to track and limit emissions it could also pave the way to make greater gas exploration easier. The support comes as high methane levels have been found in drinking water as gas exploration moves closer to residential areas.

The panel's recommendations will go to Steven Chu, the US' Energy Secretary, before a decision is made.
