As reported this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), during the week ended December 8, 2007, raw steel production in the US increased by 1.9 percent from the previous week, to 2.064 million net tons (nt).
The previous week's numbers showed 2.024 million nt of raw steel produced by the US. Steel production for the week ended December 8, 2007 was up 19.0 percent from the 1.733 million net tons produced the same week of last year.
The Southern district produced the most raw steel for the week ended December 8, 2007, with a total of 651,000 nt, followed by the Indiana/Chicago district with 523,000 nt.
Year-to-date net tonnage as of December 8, 2007 broke the 100.0 million nt mark, registering at 100.3 million nt with mills working at an average capability utilization rate of 86.0 percent. When comparing with last year's figures, YTD net tonnage as of December 8, 2006 totaled 103.1 million nt with mills working at an average capability utilization rate of 87.5 percent.
