US raw steel production slips in the last week of 2007

As reported this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), during the week ended December 29, 2007, raw steel production in the US dropped by 1.9 percent to 2.041 million net tons (nt).

The previous week's numbers showed 2.081 million nt of raw steel produced by the US. Steel production for the week ended December 29, 2007 increased by 17.7 percent from the 1.733 million net tons produced the same week of last year.

The Southern district produced the most raw steel for the week ended December 29, 2007, registering a total of 595,000 nt, followed by the Indiana/Chicago district with 538,000 nt. The district that produced the least raw steel was the Western district, with 87,000 nt.

Year-to-date net tonnage as of December 29, 2007 was 106.5 million nt, compared to YTD net tonnage of 108.3 million nt on December 29, 2006.
