US raw steel production slightly up

According to data released this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), raw steel production increased by 0.4 percent in the US during the week ended November 4, 2006, totaling 1.906 million net tons (nt). The amount of steel produced the week ended November 4 showed a 0.4 percent increase compared to the 1.899 million nt produced the previous week. Comparing the amount of raw steel produced the week ended November 4, 2006 to the same week the previous year, raw steel production was down 5.8 percent. The Southern district produced the most raw steel for the week ended November 4, 2006, followed by the Indiana/Chicago district, producing 630,000 nt and 490,000 nt respectively. Year-to-date net tonnage as of November 4 was 90.6 million nt, compared to YTD net tonnage of 86.7 million nt on November 4, 2005.
