US raw steel production slightly up

According to data released this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), raw steel production increased by 0.2 percent in the US during the week ended October 14, 2006, totaling 1.980 million net tons (nt). The amount of steel produced the week ended October 14 showed a 0.2 percent increase in relation to the 1.975 million nt produced the previous week. Comparing the amount of raw steel produced the week ended October 14, 2006 to the same week the previous year, raw steel production was up 2.8 percent. The Southern district produced the greatest quantity of raw steel for the week ended October 14, 2006, followed by the Indiana/Chicago district, producing 612,000 nt and 531,000 nt respectively. Year-to-date net tonnage as of October 14 was 84.9 million nt, compared to YTD net tonnage of 80.6 million on October 14, 2005.
