US raw steel production down 4.4 percent YTD

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Monday that year-to-date raw steel production in the US as of October 20, 2007 totaled 85.8 million nt, down 4.4 percent from the 89.7 million nt produced YTD October 20, 2006.

During the week ended October 20, 2007, raw steel production in the US decreased by 0.1 percent from the previous week, dropping to 2.126 million net tons (nt). Steel production for the week ended October 20, 2007 was up three percent from the 2.063 million net tons produced the same week of last year.

The Southern district produced the most raw steel for the week ended October 20, 2007, with a total of 641,000 nt, followed by the Indiana/Chicago district with 558,000 nt.
