US HDG imports down 26.4 percent in May

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip totaled 233,698 mt in May 2018, down 26.4 percent from April and down 19.9 percent from May 2017 levels. By value, HDG imports totaled $228.9 million in May 2018, compared to $289.4 million in the previous month and $255.9 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most HDG from Canada in May, with 97,516 mt, compared to 97,650 mt in April and 77,399 mt in May 2017. Other top sources of imported HDG in May include Turkey, with 15,513 mt; Taiwan, with 15,201 mt; Vietnam, with 14,706 mt; Netherlands, with 11,261 mt; and Austria, with 9,909 mt.
