Ukrainian steelmakers issue January-September output data

The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first nine months of 2009.

Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel product output by 38 percent and its pipe production by 62.5 percent year on year, to 2.23 million mt and 26,800 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 36 percent, its pig iron output by 32 percent and its agglomerate production by 41 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 3.1million, 2.6 million and 5.77 million.

During the first nine months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 30.9 percent to 3.23 million mt, its pig iron production by 28.3 percent to 2.78 million mt and its finished steel production by 30.3 percent to 2.97 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's metallurgical coke output registered a drop of 19.3 percent to 1.47 million mt year on year.

In January-Sepember 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 3.22 million mt of finished steel - down 30.9 percent, 3.52 million mt of crude steel - down 35.7 percent, 3.08 million mt of pig iron - down 37.5 percent, and 5.53 million mt of agglomerate - down 32.5 percent, all compared to the first nine months of 2008.

During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 23 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 26.2 percent, its finished steel production by 25.4 percent, and its agglomerate production by about five percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 2.53 million, 2.8 million, 2.55 million and 3.4 million.

During the first nine months of this year, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 24 percent to 1.58 million mt, its crude steel production by 19.4 percent to 1.79 million mt, its finished steel output by 23 percent to 1.7 million mt, and its agglomerate production by six percent to 1.53 million mt, all compared with the same period last year.

Meanwhile, during the given period, the Ukrainian steelmaker Zaporizhstal registered a 22.3 percent decrease in its finished steel production and a 24.3 percent decline in its crude steel production year on year, to 2.04 million mt and 2.43 million mt respectively. Zaporizhstal's agglomerate production went down by 16.4 percent year on year and its pig iron production declined by 23 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 3.586 million and 2.03 million.

In January-September, Dneprovsky Iron and Steel Works named after F. Dzerzhinsky slightly decreased its crude steel production by two percent year on year to 2.59 million mt, and its pig iron production by 1.9 percent year on year to 2.41 million mt. Meanwhile, during the period in question, the plant increased its output of finished steel by ten percent to 2.48 million mt, and its agglomerate production by 0.25 percent to 3.58 million mt both compared to the same period last year.
 
During the first nine months of 2009, Makeevsk MZ did not produce any crude steel or pig iron, and registered a 30 percent decrease in its finished steel output to 545,000 mt.
