Ukrainian steelmakers issue Jan-May 2009 output data

The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first five months of 2009.

Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel products output by 51.9 percent and its pipe production by 78.9 percent year on year, to 1.091 million mt and 10,500 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 48.6 percent, its pig iron output by 44.2 percent and its agglomerate production by 48.3 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 1.542 million, 1.312 million and 2.980 million.

During the first five months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 41.8 percent to 1.522 million mt, its pig iron production by 39.7 percent to 1.305 million mt and its finished steel production by 40.2 percent to 1.417 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's agglomerate production saw a slight decrease of 1.9 percent to 801,000 mt, while its metallurgical coke output registered a drop of 26.1 percent to 676,400 mt year on year.

In January-May 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 1.765 million mt of finished steel - down 40.1 percent, 1.893 million mt of crude steel - down 42.6 percent, 1.682 million mt of pig iron - down 42.5 percent, and 3.065 million mt of agglomerate - down 36 percent, all compared to the first five months of 2008.

During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 28.8 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 30.5 percent, its finished steel production by 29 percent, and its agglomerate production by 14.3 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 1.353 million, 1.494 million, 1.404 million and 1.787 million.

During the first five months of 2009, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 26.8 percent to 891,000 mt, its crude steel production by 19.9 percent to 1.03 million mt, its finished steel output by 23.1 percent to 977,100 mt, and its agglomerate production by 10.9 percent to 887,000 mt, all compared with the same period last year.

In January-May 2009, Makeevsk MZ did not produce any crude steel or pig iron, and decreased its finished steel output by 46.4 percent to 256,000 mt.
