In the January-April period this year, Ukraine’s total steel production amounted to 1.80 million mt, compared to 1.98 million mt in the same period of 2025, according to the data released by the Ukrainian Steel Association Ukrmetallurgprom. About 1.12 million mt or 62.2 percent of total steel production was exported, while 681,000 mt or 37.8 percent was consumed by the domestic market. In the January-April period of 2025, 1.23 million mt or 62.3 percent of total steel production was shipped overseas, with domestic sales amounting to 748,000 mt or 37.7 percent of total steel production. As a result, total steel exports fell by 9.2 percent, while total domestic steel sales decreased by nine percent, both on year-on-year basis.
In the given period, flat steel exports rose by 3.8 percent to 575,000 mt, while semi-finished steel exports amounted to 440,000 mt, down by 1.1 percent, both on year-on-year basis. In the January-April period, long steel exports came to 106,000 mt, moving down by 54.9 percent from the same period of last year.
The share of semi-finished products in exports in the first four months was 39.25 percent, which is higher than the 32.06 percent recorded in the same period of 2025, while the share of flat steel products in exports came to 51.29 percent, rising above 44.89 percent recorded in the same period of the previous year. Additionally, the share of long products dropped to 9.46 percent from 19.04 percent recorded in the January-April period of 2025.
Meanwhile, in the same period, domestic steel consumption decreased by one percent year on year to 1.19 million mt, of which 506,400 mt or 42.65 percent was accounted for by imports. However, in the January-April period of 2025, domestic steel consumption was 1.20 million mt, of which 450,900 mt or 37.61 percent was met through imports.
In the January-April period, Ukraine’s total steel imports came to 506,400 mt, up by 12.3 percent year on year. In particular, Ukraine imported 313,900 mt of flat steel, down by 11.7 percent year on year, while its long steel imports grew by 49.1 percent compared to the previous year to 128,500 mt. The country’s semi-finished steel exports in the first three months amounted to 64,000 mt, compared to 9,100 mt recorded in the given period of 2025.
In the meantime, the share of flat steel products in imports in the same period was 61.99 percent, compared to 78.86 percent recorded in the January-April period of 2025, while the share of long steel products rose to 25.38 percent, from 19.12 percent recorded in the same period of the previous year.
The main export markets for Ukraine in the January-April period of 2026 were the EU-27 (80.2%), other European countries (10.9%) and the CIS (6.3%), while the main import suppliers to Ukraine were other European countries (50.4%), Asia (20.4%) and the EU-27 (17.5%).
