Turkey’s pig iron imports up 39.4 percent in Q1

According to the customs statistics provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in March this year Turkey's pig iron imports amounted to 122,516 metric tons, increasing 80.6 percent compared to 67,843 mt recorded in the previous month and more than double compared to the same month of 2011.

In the first quarter of this year, Turkey imported 365,502 mt of pig iron, increasing 39.4 percent compared to the first three months of the previous year. The average import price of pig iron in January-March was $478/mt, down $36/mt or 6.9 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the TUIK data.

Turkey's top pig iron source in the first three months this year were Ukraine which supplied 222,685 mt, doubling its exports to Turkey compared to the corresponding period of 2011. Meanwhile, Russia's pig iron exports to Turkey in January-March increased by 30.5 percent year on year, amounting to 116,165 mt.
