Troubles in the can recycling system in Germany

New measures applied in Germany, aiming to simplify the return of empty cans have caused certain chaos. Prior to the new measures, shoppers had to return their empty cans solely to the point of purchase to claim the € 0.25 deposit. With the new regulation the cans can be returned to any outlet. The new regulation has caused a huge quantity of 1.6 billion bevarage cans being returned with a claim of unclaimed deposits causing a chaos with the tinplate producers. Urgent political discussions between producers and Regulators have started to salvage the situation.
