Thyssenkrupp AT.PRO tec, a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Materials Services, has announced that it has secured a research grant of €1.8 million from the EU for its decarbonization project, in which UK-based plantmaker Primetals Technologies is a partner, bringing the project’s total value to €3.5 million.
Accordingly, the company will use the grant provided by the EU’s Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) to develop a hydrogen injection method based on its sequence impulse process technology, which was successfully tested at a large blast furnace of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe in Germany. As a result, hydrogen will be directly injected into the blast furnace through its shaft.
The project, which will be completed in 2028, has the potential to cut emissions from blast furnaces by up to 20 percent while using the existing infrastructure.
