Tata Steel to deploy SMS Group technology at Jamshedpur mill as part of decarbonisation plans

Indian steelmaker Tata Steel Limited has signed a definitive agreement with Paul Wurth of SMS Group to introduce the latter’s ‘EASyMelt” technology at its Jamshedpur steel mill in India as part of its decarbonisation plans, according to a company regulatory filing on Tuesday, April 21.

The plan is to gradually convert the blast furnace (BF) E into an electrically-assisted syngas smelter, changing how iron is produced at the site, the company said.

The selected furnace will act as a working test case. It is not a small unit either. At 649 cubic meters, it represents a meaningful part of operations, which makes the outcome more relevant, the company said.

The move follows a memorandum of understanding signed with Paul Wurth in June 2023 to explore decarbonisation in iron-making. After completing a front-end engineering study, Tata Steel decided to proceed with the demonstration project.

EASyMelt, or electrically-assisted syngas smelter technology, is designed to offer greater flexibility in raw material use while lowering emissions from the iron-making process.
