Indian steelmaker Tata Steel Limited will complete decarbonization of its steel mill in the UK over the next three years, company chief executive officer T. V. Narendran said in a statement on Monday, October 2.

The decarbonization process will involve shifting to a low-emission electric arc furnace (EAF) from the blast furnace which was nearing its end of life, he said.

Tata Steel’s 3 million mt per year capacity mill located at Port Talbot, South Wales, employs 8,000 people across all operation.

Mr. Narendran said that talks are taking place with workers’ union and a number of other permissions are required and infrastructure is being upgraded, with much of the work already commenced and can be completed over the next three years.

Tata Steel and the UK government recently reached an agreement over a £1.25 billion government funding to decarbonize the Port Talbot mill.
