Japanese diversified technology group Sumitomo Corporation has announced that it has won a contract to deliver next-generation air traffic control systems to the Philippine Department of Transportation and Communication, including the building of a new air traffic control center in Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

According to the Sumitomo release, the first phase of the two-phase contract was won by a consortium of Sumitomo and Thales Australia Ltd, the Australian subsidiary of leading French electric company Thales SA.

Sumitomo will be involved in the first phase worth about JPY 9 billion and the work is to be completed within 30 months, by May 2013. Using this opportunity, Sumitomo Corporation will aim to also win the contract for the second phase, the company said.

Phase one includes construction of a new air traffic control center building within the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the Philippines, and delivery of air traffic control systems at the new air traffic control center and major airports in the Philippines. The second phase includes installation of radar at major airports in the Philippines, at about 10 sites, and connection of the air traffic control center introduced in the first phrase with major local airports.
