Sicartsa strike finally resolved

After 46 days and over $100 million in lost business, the strike at Sicartsa's steel mill in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, Mexico has been resolved. Last Thursday (September 15) management had submitted their improved proposal including an 8 percent wage increase, 34 percent hike of production incentives, and a one time bonus of 7,250 pesos ($670 USD). Members of the National Union of Mine and Metal Workers of Mexico (STMMRM) unanimously accepted the proposal late Friday and returned to work on Saturday. Sicartsa's facility in Apodaca, Nuevo Leon will remain without representation by the union for the time being. Union representatives, Grupo Villacero (Sicartsa's parent company), the School of Industrial Engineers of Nuevo Leon, the Technical Institute for Advanced Studies in Monterrey, and the University of Nuevo Leon will jointly visit the facility to determine how the plant can be unionized.
