Shougang Hierro Peru S.A.A., Peru-based iron ore mining subsidiary of Chinese steelmaker Shougang Steel, has announced that its workers have launched a strike asking for an increase in salary and improvement in working conditions.

Accordingly, 1,124 workers at the company went on strike on Wednesday last week.

Propelled by the surge in international metal prices, Shougang Hierro Peru saw year-on-year growth of 389 percent in its net profit during the first half of the current year. In 2010, the company's iron ore production reached 6.04 million mt.

In the last few years, Shougang Steel has faced many strikes in Peru.
