Salzgitter to secure wind energy for steelmaking

Germany-based steelmaker Salzgitter Group has announced that its subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH and Spanish energy producer Iberdrola have signed a long-term power supply contract.

The electricity is to be sourced from the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm currently under construction in the German Baltic Sea. Baltic Eagle, which is scheduled to be commenced at the end of 2024 and have an overall capacity of 476 megawatts, will deliver 114 megawatts of green electricity over a period of 15 years to Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.

The sustainably produced energy will serve to additionally secure the SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low-CO2 Steelmaking transformation program. The green electricity from the wind turbines will be used to produce green hydrogen and eventually manufacture of carbon-neutral steel.
