UK-based plantmaker Primetals Technologies has announced that it will modernize the 20-year old DC twin electric arc furnace at the Shanghai plant of Chinese steelmaker Baoshan Iron and Steel Co. Ltd (Baosteel). Modernization work is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

With the modernization, Baosteel is targeting improved power efficiency to reduce production costs and aims to use raw materials more flexibly. It will also be possible in future to operate the electric arc furnace with a hot metal content of up to 90 percent. The twin electric arc furnace is part of a production line on which billets and long products are manufactured for use as structural steels.
