On October 24, SteelOrbis reported the joint venture between MSTC, an Indian state-run entity, and Mahindra Trade to establish recycling sites throughout India. According to a press release, the Greater Noida facility has begun trial runs in the first phase of collecting and dismantling vehicles. Mr. BB Hisgn, the chairman and managing director of MSTC stated that incoming vehicle scrap is presently insufficient, therefore, the site will also dismantle industrial waste. With upcoming government policies addressing abandoned vehicles and end-of-life vehicles, scrap inventories are expected to increase.
Sanjay Mehta, President of the Metal Recycling Association of India, said, “There has to be a change in the laws. Without adequate support the plan to developing scrapping sites and provide them the necessary feedstock, this plan will not work.”
The second phase of the JV will establish the first organized auto shredding plant in Kandla, Gujarat. The second site is expected to be operational in early 2019.
