India’s scrap imports up 8 percent in H1 2018

According to preliminary custom data, India increased its crude steel production from 50.29 million mt in H1 2017 to 52.83 million mt in H1, an increase of 5.1 percent. Along with the increase in crude steel production, ferrous scrap imports increased to 2.41 million mt in H1 2018, up 8.1 percent compared to 2.23 million mt the same period a year ago.

The scrap was imported from the UAE (0.52 million mt, 22 percent), US (0.29 million mt, 12 percent), UK (0.23 million mt, 10 percent), Singapore (0.18 million mt, 8 percent), South Africa (0.15 million mt, 6 percent), and others (1.04 million mt, 43 percent), and 70 percent of the bulk scrap cargoes imported were from the US.
