According to an NGO shipbreaking report, 835 ships were dismantled worldwide in 2017. The leading countries for scrapped ships were India (239), Bangladesh (197), Turkey (133), Pakistan (107), China (98), EU (27), and other countries (37).
In the second quarter of CY 2018, 220 were logged as having been dismantled. The leading countries for scrapped ships for the period were India (82), Bangladesh (49), Pakistan (38), Turkey (33), China (5), and EU and others (13). The number of ships dismantled in 2018 is expected to remain stable compared to 2017.
While India scrapped the most ships in terms of units, Bangladesh was the preferred destination for larger vessels and broke most in terms of gross tonnage.
