India’s scrap imports at 2.9 million mt in first seven months

According to preliminary customs data, India imported 2.92 million mt in the first seven months of 2018, with 0.51 million mt of ferrous scrap imported in July.

The scrap was imported from the UAE (0.58 million mt, 20 percent), the US (0.41 million mt, 14 percent), the UK (0.28 million mt, 10 percent), Singapore (0.22 million mt, 8 percent), South Africa (0.18 million mt, 6 percent), Australia (0.10 million mt, 3 percent), and others (1.15 million mt, 39 percent).

Imports are up 6.2 percent compared to 2.75 million mt of ferrous scrap imported by India in the same period in 2017. In the first seven months of 2017, the top three sources for scrap imports were the US (0.47 million mt, 17 percent), UAE (0.38 million mt, 14 percent), and the UK (0.35 million mt, 13 percent).
