Kazakhstan-based Mittal Steel Temirtau has announced that it may start using Russian coal in an effort to keep its mills running, since the current miners' strike in the country has begun to threaten operations at its steel plants. Mr NK Choudhary GD of Mittal Steel Temirtau said, “We are trying to avoid temporary closures at the company's workshops and to find coal from Russia.” As previously reported by SteelOrbis, coal miners went on strike for better wages, safety and social conditions after a methane gas blast on September 20 killed 41 at Mittal Steel's Lenin coal mine in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan. Workers at all eight of Mittal Steel Temirtau mines are still on strike.
