Mexican rebar production increased 2.6 percent, year-over-year, in January 2023, while consumption increased and exports decreased, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron Industry and Steel (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.
In January, rebar production totaled 374,000 mt, up 2.6 percent year-on-year. Consumption increased 3.5 percent or 11,000 mt. Exports decreased 3.2 or 1,000 mt to a total 45,000 mt. Rebar production is one of the few products (at least among the 10 most important of Canacero) that exceeds consumption.
Statistical data shows that rebar's reign as the highest-producing finished steel product in Mexico is weakening and could be displaced by hot rolled sheet (HRC). In January 2022, rebar production exceeded HRC by 108,000 metric tons, and in January 2023 it only exceeded it by 27,000 mt.
In terms of exports, the rebar is the second most exported product, only surpassed by seamless steel tubes with 54,000 mt.
According to another Canacero report, the steel producers that manufacture rebar are ArcelorMittal, DeAcero, Gerdau Corsa, Grupo Acerero, Simec (through Aceros San Luis, Aceros DM and Siderúrgica del Golfo, Sigosa), Ternium, and Talleres y Aceros (TYASA).
