UK-based mining giant Anglo American plc's South Africa-based iron ore producing subsidiary Kumba Iron Ore Limited has announced that it has agreed with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to the salary and wage offer of 7.5 percent, nine percent and 10 percent increases in various categories, which includes a 0.5 percent safety increment based on the 2009 performance.
The parties have also agreed to extend this to a multi-year agreement as well as to a working group to investigate options on how worker skills are recognized.
Final agreement has been reached and union representatives will hold meetings at the mines to call off their planned strike
As SteelOrbis previously reported, the NUM notified the company on September 29, 2010 of a protected strike by its members to commence "anytime between Sunday, October 3, 2010 in the evening and Monday, October 4, 2010 in the morning."
The NUM has 2,670 members who are part of the bargaining unit at Kumba's three mines, namely, Sishen, Kolomela and Thabazimbi.
