Strike to start at three Kumba mines

UK-based mining giant Anglo American plc's South Africa-based iron ore producing subsidiary Kumba Iron Ore Limited has announced that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) notified the company on September 29, 2010 of a protected strike by its members to commence "anytime between Sunday, October 3, 2010 in the evening and Monday, October 4, 2010 in the morning."

According to a Kumba statement, the NUM has 2,670 members who are part of the bargaining unit at Kumba's three mines, namely, Sishen, Kolomela and Thabazimbi. The strike is not expected to impact production significantly as the company also has sufficient iron ore stockpiles to maintain its normal delivery schedule.

Agreement has been reached on salary and wage increases with Solidarity, the other bargaining unit union, and has been implemented with effect from July 1, 2010.
