India’s Ministry of Steel has added 16 additional steel product categories to the Steel and Steel Products Quality Control Order 2018, a government official said on Monday, June 25.

Under the order, steel products without certification of the Bureau of Industrial Standards (BIS) could not be produced, sold, imported across the country, the official said.

While domestic steel mills will have to apply for certification licenses from BIS, foreign steel products suppliers will have to apply to BIS seeking registration of their products with it before making any shipments into the country, the official added.

The fresh list of 16 steel product categories has been added to 34 carbon steel and stainless steel product categories already put under the order last year, the official said.

The new addition largely comprises various grades of steel tinplates used packaging of food items, food preservatives and used in pharmaceutical and drug industries.
