India’s DGS convenes public hearing on steel safeguard duty

Monday, 26 October 2015 16:48:33 (GMT+3)   |   Kolkata
Responding to opposition from steel-user industries, India’s Director General Safeguards (DGS) has convened a public hearing on the recent imposition of 20 percent import duty on hot rolled coil (HRC), an official at India’s Ministry of Steel and Mines said on Monday, October 26.

The official said that the public hearing to be held on November 16 will invite all stakeholders in the steel industry - producers and users - to seek opinions on the safeguard duty on imports and to enable the government to reconcile the conflicting demands of both sections of the industry.

The official stated that the public hearing will also enable the government to take a view on import protection for the domestic industry which has been seeking extension of safeguard duties to include other steel products like cold rolled coil (CRC), galvanized steel and wire rods.
