Global crude steel output up 8.3 percent in Jan-Oct

According to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), in October this year the crude steel output of 64 countries surveyed across the globe reached 123.98 million mt, increasing by 5.6 percent on year-on-year basis. Total global crude steel production increased 0.86 percent on month-on-month basis in October, from the 122.93 million mt recorded in September. Total global crude steel output in the first 10 months of the year was 1.26 billion mt, up by 8.3 percent year on year.
 
In October, crude steel output in Asia amounted to 78.04 million mt, up by 7.65 percent, with 54.7 million mt produced by China, up by 8.7 percent, 9.48 million mt produced by Japan, down by 0.3 percent, and 6.1 million mt produced by South Korea, up by 16.9 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis.

EU-27 countries produced 15.27 million mt of crude steel in October, down 1.5 percent comparing with October 2010. In October, Germany's output was 3.7 million mt, down by 4.14 percent year on year, Italy's crude steel output was 2.7 million mt, up 8.9 percent year on year, and Spain's crude steel output was 1.3 million mt, down 6.3 percent year on year.

Turkey produced 3.08 million metric tons of crude steel in October this year, with a 14.14 percent increase over the same month in 2010, while Iran's crude steel output improved by 1.4 percent year on year, reaching an estimated figure of 1.1 million metric tons.

The CIS registered a crude steel output of 9.7 million mt in October, up four percent year on year, with Russia producing an estimated figure of 5.92 million mt, up by 3.3 percent, and Ukraine producing an estimated 3.07 million mt, up 4.2 percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In North America in October, crude steel output reached 10 million mt, up 9.5 percent year on year, with the US producing 7.3 million mt and Mexico producing 1.5 million mt, up 11.5 percent and 6.3 percent respectively on year-on-year basis.
 
Meanwhile, crude steel output in South America in October reached 4.1 million mt, up by 2.9 percent year on year, with Brazil's output reaching 3 million mt, down by 1.3 percent year on year.
 
In the given month, the average capacity utilization of steel mills across the globe was 76.5 percent, down by 2.2 percentage points month on month, and also up one percentage point compared to the same month last year.
