Switzerland-headquartered international commodities producer and trader Glencore, which operates a chrome joint venture with South Africa’s Merafe Resources, has announced its production results for the first quarter this year.

In the first quarter, Glencore’s 79.5 percent share of attributable ferrochrome production rose by 3.3 percent year on year to 400,000 mt.

In the given period, the company’s coal production totaled 26.9 million mt, down by 5.6 percent year on year, reflecting the short-term impact of geological anomalies in mining in South Africa. In particular, in the first quarter, Glencore’s coking coal production was two million mt, down by 4.7 percent year on year.

The company announced that its coal output guidance for 2023 stands unchanged at around 110 million mt.

Meanwhile, the Newlands coal mine in Queensland stopped production in February this year. The Liddell coal mine is scheduled to stop production later in 2023.
