Fortescue finds direct ship iron ore in Pilbara

Australia's Fortescue Mining Group announced that it has discovered substantial tonnages of iron ore close to the surface in Australia's Western Pilbara region that can be shipped directly to customers without any further processing. This discovery could potentially lead to a substantially lower cost mining option. This discovery was made by Fortescue explorers and scientists at Christmas Creek in the Chichester Ranges of Australia's Western Pilbara region. Fortescue's CEO Andrew Forrest announced in a public statement that the company's “conservative” estimate indicates that approximately 100 million tons of direct ship iron ore exist in the area explored at Christmas Creek however more specific figures are expected to be determined in the next three to four weeks. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, the site at Christmas Creek is the primary drilling site for Fortescue's $1.85 billion iron ore and infrastructure project in the Pilbara region of western Australia.
