Flats lead increase in US steel exports in September

The American Institute for International Steel (AIIS) reported Thursday that total steel exports from the US in September were 1.213 million tons--up 2 percent from August, and a 22.7 percent surge compared to September 2010. Year-to-date, exports also increased 8.9 percent compared to steel exports in the first nine months of 2010.

Data from the US Department of Commerce show that 81,639 mt of hot rolled sheet was exported in September, compared to 62,806 mt exported in August; imports of cold rolled sheet jumped from 54,155 mt in August to 75,385 mt in September. Exports of bars-light shaped also climbed, increasing from 5,683 mt in August to 20,919 in September. Exports of other steel products experienced much less significant month-on-month changes.
