Five miners were killed in a fire on August 17 at Kazakhstan-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal Temirtau’s Kazakhstanskaya coal mine, according to the company’s statement.

There were 227 people underground when a conveyor belt at the mine caught fire.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, president of Kazakhstan, has instructed government officials to investigate the causes of the incident. The government’s statement signaled that the company’s presence in the Kazakhstan market is in danger.

ArcelorMittal Temirtau owns 15 coal and ore mines in Kazakhstan.
