Italian steel companies Acciaierie di Sicilia, part of Brescia-based Italian steelmaker Alfa Acciai Group, and Feralpi Siderurgica, based in Lonato, Brescia, have obtained OHSAS 18001 certification, an international occupational health and safety management system specification.

Obtaining this certificate has required a major effort by Acciaierie di Sicilia, which has recently invested €20 million in improving facilities and work safety and which this year will spend further a €10 million in order to improve efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Meanwhile, Feralpi Siderurgica has integrated its new health and safety management system with the system recognized by environmental standard ISO 14001. The OHSAS 18001 certification is accompanied by a process of training and involvement of the company personnel. Giuseppe Pasini, Feralpi Group president, said that the goal is to entrench a culture of work safety by creating a sense of responsibility at all levels.
