Italian plantmaker Danieli Technologies has announced that it has been awarded a contract by Egypt-based steelmaker Ezz Flat Steelfor the complete modernization of the Quality Strip Production (QSP®) casting and rolling complex at the company’s Ain Sokhna works in Egypt. The complex was originally supplied and commissioned by Danieli in 2003.

A key part of the project will be the installation of a new vacuum degasser-oxygen blowing (VDOB) plant. This unit will extend the capabilities of the existing meltshop and support the production of more advanced steel grades.

The upgraded QSP® complex will increase productivity from its original level of 1.175 million mt to 1.5 million mt. The modernization will also allow Ezz Flat Steel to produce a broader range of high added-value steel products. The existing installation already represents an important benchmark for the steel industry, as it was the first QSP line worldwide certified for the production of API X70 line pipe steel.

The QSP® upgrade will involve extensive modernization of the thin-slab caster, including a new roll diagram and upgraded automation. Danieli will also revamp the tunnel furnace and the hot-strip mill, while improvements will be made to the connected water treatment plant. The main drive systems of the hot-strip mill will be upgraded with Danieli Q-Drive Cyclo technology. This will maintain the existing power components while improving performance and reliability.

The project will be implemented in two phases. The VDOB plant is scheduled to start operation in May 2027, while the full upgrade is expected to be completed by May 2028.
