Duferdofin-Nucor to invest in new rolling mill in Brescia

The board of Duferdofin-Nucor (DN), a 50:50 joint venture between the Switzerland-headquartered international group Duferco and US-based steel producer Nucor Corporation has decided to build a new rolling mill in Italy at the plant in San Zeno Naviglio, Brescia, where 150 new jobs will be created .

According to the statement released by the company, this is an investment of over €150 million, which will allow the construction of an integrated plant for the optimal verticalization of the steel produced by the San Zeno steelworks.

The objective is the construction of a rolling mill for beams and other rolled products with a very low environmental impact, high energy savings and the use of renewable energies thanks to the stipulation of a long-term PPA (power purchase agreement).

With the new plant, the entire Duferdofin-Nucor production system will reach about one million metric tons of rolled products annually.

The existing mills of Pallanzeno (Verbania) and Giammoro (Messina) will be specialized - the first mainly on special profiles and the second mainly on the geographical markets of the Mediterranean.

The authorization process for the new rolling mill has already been initially, while the rolling mill is expected to start operating by the end of 2022.

Antonio Gozzi, president of Duferdofin-Nucor, said, “This is the culmination of a dream and the result of a long continuous improvement activity, in which all the staff of DN have been committed during recent years. Our goal is to make DN even more excellent, profitable and sustainable in the interest of all stakeholders. I thank our partner Nucor for the support it has given to the initiative and I can confirm the great pride of Duferco for this collaboration.”
