Domestic steel production is slightly up

According to data released this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), raw steel production increased by 0.7 percent in the US during the week ending July 24, 2006 producing 2.053 million net tons (nt) of raw steel. The amount of steel produced this week showed a 0.7 percent increase compared to the 2.037 million nt produced the previous week. An increase in steel production was also shown when comparing the same week the previous year. The week ending July 24th, 2005 registered 1.783 million nt of steel produced, 15.1 percent less than the week ending July 24th, 2006. The Southern district produced the most raw steel for the week ending July 24, 2006 followed by the Indiana/Chicago district producing 657,000 nt and 519,000 nt respectively. Year-to-date net tonnage as of July 24, was 60.2 million nt, compared to YTD net tonnage of 57.3 million nt on July 24, 2005.
