Coal mining partially halted at Mechel subsidiary

Mechel, one of the leading Russian mining and steelmaking companies, has announced that coal mining at its subsidiary Southern Kuzbass Coal Company's New-Olzherassk underground mine's long wall No. 21-1-7 has been temporarily halted due to high levels of carbon monoxide.

Mechel stated that the high levels of carbon monoxide have been caused by coal self-heating at the New-Olzherassk underground mine. Southern Kuzbass Coal Company's experts are working on measures to eliminate self-heating. The date of resumption of mining will be determined once the project for eliminating the self-heating has been completed.

According to Mechel's statement, suspension of operations at the mine's long wall face No. 21-1-7 will not cause delays in coal deliveries to customers since coal stocks at the New-Olzherassk underground mine are sufficient.
