Brazilian crude steel output declines in May

Brazilian crude steel output in May fell 22.6 percent, year-on-year, to 2.2 million, according to a report from the local steel association, IABr.

Domestic steel sales in May declined 23.2 percent, year-on-year, to 1.2 million mt. Apparent steel consumption in May was 1.3 million mt, 24.8 percent down, year-on-year.

Brazilian exports of steel in May reached 940,000 mt in volume and $464 million in value, 23.9 percent down, and 39 percent down, respectively, both on a year-on-year basis.

Brazilian imports of steel in May totaled 149,000 mt in volume and $163 million in value. The figures represent a 36 percent decline in volume, and a 31.4 percent decrease in value, both on a year-on-year analysis.

As for the accumulated period of January to May, Brazilian crude steel production reached 12.1 million mt, 15.9 percent down, year-on-year. Domestic steel sales in the January-May period diminished 12.3 percent, year-on-year, to 6.8 million mt. Apparent steel consumption in the Jan-May period decreased 12.6 percent, year-on-year, to 7.6 million mt.

Brazilian exports of steel in the accumulated period of January to May reached 5.1 million mt in volume, and $2.6 billion in value, 9.3 percent and 22.4 percent down, year-on-year, respectively. Brazilian imports of steel in Jan-May reached 854,000 mt, 21.7 percent down, year-on-year, in volume. Brazilian steel imports in the same five-month period totaled $908 million in value, a 17.2 percent year-on-year decline.
