The Brazilian minister of women, family and human rights, Damares Alves, has named a retired Brazilian army general, who has a relationship with the mining sector, to lead the local indigenous agency, Funai.

Franklimberg de Freitas was appointed as the president of Funai to solve disputes with the indigenous people, as the Bolsonaro administration signals to ease rules to explore the Amazon region for mining-related activities.

Freitas reportedly advised companies like Belo Sun.

Freitas is expected to cross Funai’s data with the local National Mining Agency (ANN), which oversees policies for the local mining sector, including industry norms, information and the use of mineral resources in Brazil.

ANN was created by former president Michel Temer in 2017.
