Brazil increases crude steel production in July

Brazil's crude steel production increased 5.3 percent year on year to 2.9 million mt in July 2007, Brazilian Steel Institute (IBS) announced on Thursday, August 23.

Thanks to the strong demand from the automotive and construction sectors, Brazil's flat steel output for the domestic market jumped to 1.1 million mt, up 15 percent year on year. Meanwhile, production of steel plate reached 2.2 million mt, an increase of 3.6 percent from July 2006.

For the first seven months of 2007, total Brazilian crude steel production reached 19.2 million mt, up 11.6 percent compared to the figure of 17.2 million mt for the same period last year.

Brazil's total steel export volume for July 2007 was 653,100 mt, up 0.3 percent from 651,000 mt for July 2006.
