Belarus may initiate a tender for the construction of a new steel mill in the near future, Belarusian sources have reported, citing the country's Prime Minister Sergei Sidorskiy.

Mr. Sidorskiy added that the government intends to submit the proposal to the Belarus President for consideration.

Currently, the country is concluding a study on the technico-economic basis of the project. The total amount of investment in the project is estimated at the level of $2 billion.

Russian steelmaker Severstal has been named as one of the possible bidders for the project.

Currently, Belarus has one metallurgical plant, Byelorussian Iron and Steel Works, which mainly produces long steel and also steel hardware products. The mill exports 85 percent of its output to 50 different countries.
