Lin Xiuzhen, the director of the science and technology development department of major Chinese steel producer Baosteel, has stated that Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region-based Baosteel subsidiary Bayi Iron and Steel (Bagang) has in the last few years been focusing on the development of line pipe, automobile steel and steel plate products. The Baosteel official said that during China's 12th five-year plan period (2011-2015) Bagang would continue to focus on the development of these products to meet demand in the local market.

As Lin revealed, in the 2011-2015 period Bagang plans to invest RMB 30 billion ($4.5 billion) in exploitation of resources, the structural adjustment of products and technical upgrades. With these investments, Bagang aims to reach an annual steel production capacity of 10 million mt by the end of the period in question and to become the most competitive steel enterprise in the western region of China and in Central Asia.
