Germany-based ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH, a subsidiary of Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal, has announced that it will set up a pilot electrolysis plant and a hydrogen filling station, together with German energy supplier Vulkan Energiewirtschaft Oderbrücke and French electrolyser manufacturer McPhy, to decarbonize its steel production with the use of hydrogen.

The electrolysis plant with an output of 2 MW is scheduled to go into operation in 2024. The two electrolysers, which will be supplied by McPhy, will generate hydrogen for direct use in steel production.

The state of Brandenburg is funding the project with €5.1 million.
